Space travel coming to an airport near you? Maybe, if Skylon keeps its cool

Want to get from New York to Perth in under 4 hours, or maybe just head to outer space on a lark? Reaction Engines’ “Skylon” mach 5 spaceplane might be your chariot — or not. Its scheme of ingesting oxygen from the atmosphere instead of stowing it like a 50-year old modern multi-stage rocket sounds good, but the project’s fate may hang on critical new tests. Failure is still a possibility, but if the high-speed, superhot gases can be cooled enough for the hybrid Sabre engines to work, and if Reaction Engines Limited can secure another round of funding, punching your space-ticket could soon be a very real possibility.

Google Drive official: 5GB of free storage, Chrome web apps, Wave-like sharing and editing (video)

google drive

If it happened any other way, it just wouldn’t be as satisfying, now would it? After years of leaks, murmurs, hubbub and other familiar synonyms, Google’s mythical cloud storage platform is now official… sort of. As Lady Fate would have it, the company apparently outed a memo of the features on its French blog earlier today, but before it could yank the ‘pull’ switch, an eagle-eyed reader managed to grab the text and run it through — surprise, surprise — Google Translate. What’s left is an official-as-you’ll-get-right-now transcript of Google Drive’s features, but contrary to the hype, it all feels way more enterprise-centric than consumers may have wanted. For starters, there’s no real mention of music (we guess Google Music is on its own, there), and there’s just 5GB of free storage for “documents, videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs, etc.” According to the brief, it’s designed to let users “live, work and play in the cloud,” with direct integration with Docs and Google+.

We’re also told that Drive can be installed on one’s Mac, PC or Android phone / tablet, while an iOS version will be “available in the coming weeks.” Of note, Google’s making this accessible to visually impaired consumers with the use of a screen reader. As for features? Naturally, Google’s flexing its search muscles in as many ways as possible; if you scan in a newspaper clipping, a simple Search All within Drive will allow results to appear directly from said clipping. If you upload a shot of the Eiffel Tower, it’ll show up whenever you search for the aforesaid icon. Moreover, Drive will allow folks to open over 30 types of documents directly from a web browser, including HD video, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and more — “even without the software installed on your computer.” For those concerned about access, the new platform will have the same infrastructure as any other Google Apps services, giving admins a familiar set of management tools on that end.

On the topic of storage, just 5GB are provided gratis, with 25GB costing $2.49 per month, 100GB running you $4.99 per month and 1TB demanding $49.99 per month, with a maximum of 16TB ($799.99 per month, if you’re curious) per user; thankfully, Google Docs will not be included in your usage total. Finally, the note played up the ability to “attach documents directly into your Drive Gmail,” and given that it’s intended to be an open platform, Goog’s promising to work with third party developers in order to enhance Drive’s functionality even further. The source link below is still dead as of right now, but it simply can’t be long before the lights are officially turned on. Oh, and if you’re not enamored at the moment, the outfit’s suggesting that “many more developments” will be arriving in the coming weeks.

Update: It’s live on the Google Play store, and a pair of explanatory videos are embedded after the break!

Intel Core i7-2700K

posted by degveeg

in editorial

When Intel released its line of second-generation Core processors a year ago (under the ?Sandy Bridge? code name), it offered consumers new opportunities in various areas of CPU performance, regardless of how much you wanted to spend. The top chip at launch was the Core i7-2600K (4 stars), a four-core, eight-thread, 3.4GHz powerhouse that clearly defined the high end of the mainstream space. But as Sandy Bridge approached the end of its brief life span, a minor update was needed to help guide the family into a more Ivy Bridge??friendly world. That CPU, the Core i7-2700K ($332 list) was to serve as a bare replacement for the Core i7-2600K, without upsetting too many digital apple carts along the way. At that job, and any others required of it, it succeeds?if not dazzlingly.

The Core i7-2700K represents a mere 100MHz speed bump above its predecessor, to 3.5GHz. But all of its other characteristics are identical: 8MB of cache, four cores and eight threads (thanks to Intel?s Hyper-Threading technology), integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, and the full line of shiny Sandy Bridge features, ranging from Turbo Boost 2.0 (which temporarily increases processing speed when the appropriate head room is available), Quick Sync Video (for faster rendering and conversion of video files), and so on. Of course, the Core i7-2700K also shares some of the same limitations of the Core i7-2600K, most notably in that graphics system. It supports only DirectX 10.1 (DX10.1), not DX11, and won?t provide more than adequate support for any builder who declines (for whatever reason) to use a discrete video card.

For those who don?t already own a Core i7-2600K, the evidence is clear: There?s no reason to upgrade. Testing both the older chip and the new one in the same desktop revealed that there?s practically little performance difference between the two. As you might expect, the faster chip inspired a few marginal improvements. We saw, for example, scores of 7.28 versus 7.26 in CineBench R11.5, 3,725 versus 3,679 in the Futuremark PCMark 7 full-system test, and the newer chip needed five fewer seconds to complete the POV-Ray 3.7 single-CPU rendering test (14 minutes 54 seconds versus 14:59). But in other tests we saw no substantial changes at all; both chips took 2 minutes 50 seconds to apply a dozen filters and effects in Adobe Photoshop CS5, both took 32 seconds to convert a video in Handbrake 0.9.6, and both achieved the same 206MBps rate in our TrueCrypt 7.1a cryptography trial. Even power usage was functionally identical between the chips, with the full systems for both idling at 71 watts and achieving about 167 watts under full load.

We ran as much of our suite of gaming tests on the Core i7-2700K as we could to measure its graphics prowess, but the lack of DX11 support limited what we could do. As it was, it proved inadequate for most basic 3D gaming at a fairly standard gamer?s resolution of 1,920 by 1,200; in Tom Clancy?s HAWX2, usually the benchmark at which lower-tier video hardware does best, the Core i7-2700K could eke out only 15fps with all the details maxed. If you?re willing to dial back on the eye candy and play at a lower resolution, you will be able to get playable frame rates using just the Core i7-2700K. But our recommendation about this likewise hasn?t changed much from the Core i7-2600K days: Buy a discrete video card, even an inexpensive one, so you can leave the CPU to what it does best. (For better integrated graphics at this point, AMD APUs are the preferred way to go?but you?ll sacrifice raw performance as a result.)

At this point, with Ivy Bridge just around the corner, the Core i7-2700K is an upgrade that will appeal primarily to enthusiasts looking for every last drop of speed they can squeeze from a CPU. Its unlocked multiplier means it?s every bit as overclockable as its forebear, and that extra 100MHz gives you a nice, if subdued, additional nudge out the starting gate. But if you already have a Core i7-2600K, there?s no reason to replace it now. If you want to stay within the Sandy Bridge family, our favorite remains the Editors? Choice Core i5-2500K (4.5 stars), which lags behind the Core i7-2600K by 100MHz, lacks a bit of cache, and doesn?t have Hyper-Threading, but delivers nearly equivalent performance in most areas and costs considerably less ($216 list). If, however, you?re seeking out the fastest second-generation Core chip you can find, and aren?t concerned about its relationship to the Core i7-2600K or its rapidly approaching obsolescence with Ivy Bridge, the Core i7-2700K is a potent choice for powering a high-end middle-of-the-road PC.

MGM delivers 600 movies to YouTube and Google Play

With Robocop currently in rotation on both Netflix and HBO Go, you’re probably wondering, “where else can I get my daily dose of media and cultural criticism delivered by a trigger happy law enforcement cyborg?” Well, YouTube and Google Play apparently. MGM has struck a deal with the folks in Mountain View to bring 600 of its titles to the streaming services, including the aforementioned dystopian-Detroit sci-fi classic. Of course, plenty of other top shelf titles will also be available to rent and purchase in the coming weeks — including Terminator, Rocky and Rain Man. Unfortunately for those not in the northern portion of the western hemisphere the deal is only applicable to the US and Canada. This also means that, regardless of whatever struggles Google has had in the content distribution market, it now has four of the five major studios on board. Though, we wouldn’t hold your breath for Fox.

Petrino, mistress exchanged 100s of calls, texts

posted by degveeg

in editorial

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) ? Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino and his mistress exchanged more than 4,300 text messages and nearly 300 phone calls over the past seven months ? on game days, before dawn and even as the police report that hastened his downfall was being released to the public, according to a review of his business cellphone records by The Associated Press.

The messages, among some 300 pages of records released under a Freedom of Information Act request, appear to include picture and video files, though there was no way to verify the content. But the records clearly show a married father of four in frequent contact with Jessica Dorrell, a 25-year-old former Razorbacks volleyball player.

Petrino was fired Tuesday night for failing to disclose his relationship with Dorrell, whom he hired last month without disclosing his conflict of interest or the fact he had once paid her $20,000. Athletic director Jeff Long said he had determined their relationship had been ongoing for a “significant” amount of time, but he did not say for how long.

The phone records show that Petrino remained in close contact with Dorrell following the April 1 motorcycle accident in which Petrino suffered four broken ribs, a cracked neck vertebra and scrapes and bruises

That day, Petrino and Dorrell went for a motorcycle ride on a two-lane highway southeast of Fayetteville and skidded off the road. Petrino and Dorrell talked for 16 minutes earlier that day before the crash at 6:45 p.m., and they also had a 22-minute conversation the following day ? while Petrino was apparently still in the hospital recovering.

Petrino’s accident report was disclosed by state police on April 5, and the two talked 11 times that day. That included a pair of 2-minute calls around 3:30 p.m., when police were releasing the report that for the first time exposed her presence at the accident.

Later that evening, as questions swirled about his future at Arkansas, Petrino exchanged four calls with his agent, Russ Campbell, totaling 10 minutes.

The cellphone records show Petrino and Dorrell were in contact at least as far back as Sept. 12. The university provided nearly seven months of Petrino’s business cellphone records, and that is the first date listed. Among the findings:

Petrino, a married father of four, exchanged 91 texts with Dorrell on Sept. 13 and 84 texts with her over five hours on Oct. 28, the day before a game at Vanderbilt. On Oct. 17, the two swapped 73 text messages, and on four days in a row in the week before a loss to eventual national champion Alabama, Petrino called Dorrell early — at 5:52 a.m., 6:35 a.m., 5:49 a.m. and 7:55 a.m.

The day Arkansas beat Troy, the two exchanged 70 texts. They exchanged 26 texts the day Arkansas beat Mississippi State and four following the Razorbacks’ loss to LSU on Nov. 25. Dorrell sent Petrino during Arkansas’ Cotton Bowl win over Kansas State, though the coach didn’t reply until the following day.

The 51-year-old Petrino built Arkansas into a national power, including a 21-5 record over the past two seasons and a No. 5 ranking in last season’s final AP poll. He was expected to lead the Hogs on a national title run next season, but his career was effectively ended the day of the accident.

Petrino didn’t disclose her presence on the ride until the police report was issued; he told his boss, athletic director Jeff Long, about 20 minutes before the report was released to the public.

The records show Petrino’s six-minute call to Long at 3:11 p.m., the call during which the coach first told Long of his inappropriate relationship with Dorrell and her presence at the accident.

Petrino has issued a lengthy apology and said he was focused on trying to make amends to his family.

Microsoft Quietly Acquires Netscape Patents in Billion-Dollar Deal

posted by degveeg

in editorial

AOL Inc. shares spiked significantly after the company announced it had sold 800 of its patents and licenses to Microsoft Corp. for roughly $1.06 billion. The company says that it will likely return some of the sale proceeds to shareholders, who have been feeling the hurt over the last several years as AOL has struggled to find its footing in the era of high-speed Internet.

AOL shares surged to $26.66 — more than 43-percent increase — pushing the company’s market cap up to $2.53 billion. While the sale of 800 patents was great news for AOL shareholders, the same went for Microsoft executives, who were able to acquire several important technologies through patents that they either wholly or partially own.

Among those technologies that Microsoft bought was part of Netscape, one of the legacy technologies that AOL has owned since the 1990s. Microsoft will acquire the underlying patents for the old browser reports AllThingsD, but AOL will hold onto the brand including technologies such as the URL and its ISP.

Patents have become a powerful form of currency for technology companies in recent years. As Yahoo has exhibited in its lawsuit against Facebook, patents can be used in defensive, last-resort business tactics, and as Google has shown by purchasing Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., patents can be acquired to position your business in a better place long-term growth. While Microsofts’ purchase of 800 patents may not stack up to these recent patent stories, the move is just another indication of well-established technology brands rearranging priorities to ensure future growth.
